Jan 29, 2025    Michael Hagen

Our study this week introduces us to the book of Hebrews, we look at a detailed exploration of the themes of Christ’s superiority, faith, and the practical applications of living a Christian life within the church age. Hebrews is particularly relevant for understanding the present situation of the church, it's call to faith, and perseverance amidst trials. The promise of Christ's superior priestly ministry serves as a foundation for hope and expectation of His imminent return. Hebrews encourages believers to recognize the significant transitions from the Old to the New Covenant, pointing to Christ as better than previous mediators and covenants. It calls for actionable steps to live a life of faith that aligns with God's plan for the church today, emphasizing the necessity of community, endurance, and continual spiritual growth.

Overview and Themes

Christ’s Superiority: Hebrews highlights Jesus as supreme over past periods where God spoke through prophets, angels, and the Mosaic law. This is underscored by His role as the High Priest and mediator of a better covenant.

Warnings and Exhortations:

Hebrews emphasizes several warnings against drifting, falling away, and neglecting fellowship, paired with exhortations to persevere and enter God’s rest.

Faith and Practical Living:

Hebrews 11 provides a "Hall of Faith," illustrating concrete examples of faith throughout periods of God engaging with mankind. Chapters 12-13 then focus on living out that faith practically.

1. Daily Scripture Reading: Consistently engage with the Bible to guard against spiritual drift (Hebrews 2:1-4).

2. Have a point of rest in your week: Set apart a day for rest and reflection (Hebrews 3:7-4:13).

3. Participate in Community: Involve yourself in gathering together with like minded believers, which will foster growth and accountability (Hebrews 10:25).

4. Gratitude: Practice thankfulness in all circumstances as an act of worship (Hebrews 12).

5. Exemplify Fellowship and Service: Engage in hospitality and acts that encourage others in trusting the Lord that His understanding and ways are better than our ways in each situation in our lives. (Hebrews 13).
